As a long-time user of GIMP, it's a pretty solid art program for being free. Some people hate the interface, but that's totally able to be customized. I have a recommended theme along with a splash screen I have made (what you see before the application opens). Is it weird that I prefer GIMP over photoshop? *shrug* Adding a Theme
The default GIMP theme is alright, but I recommend using this theme pack by android272, as it is clean-cut and modern: Flat GIMP icon Theme V 2.1
Just follow the instructions he has, and bam you have a pretty awesome interface.
The Splash Screen
Honestly, the splash screen is the least important thing to customize but eh why not. If you want to make your own .png of one, the sizing is 557x346 pixels. If you want my cheesy but cute premade one, have it! Click this to download the splash screen.
To add it, navigate to: C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\images\
Now, delete the default splash screen, and drag this new one (make sure it's named gimp-splash) into the gimp images folder you navigated to.
Basic Keyboard Shortcuts Halp
Knowing the shortcuts to GIMP is purely for efficiency. Here are some that I know of that I use all the time (For Windows):
-Save CTL+Scroll wheel
-Zoom in and out
while making lines makes lines straight.
My typical brush setting to make smooth lines is using the paintbrush
with smooth stroke toggled
, at 100 quality
, and a weight of 30
